Growing up I was more interested in riding my bike through orange groves or hiking through a canyon than I was in eating. I was the only thin female in a family of yo-yo dieters. I had the figure of a boy from shoulders to ankles. I never really gave it much thought except when others would point out how skinny I was and how I could eat anything I wanted. Maybe it was the level of activity that kept me thin, maybe it was youth, but it all changed "overnight" when I got pregnant at age 19 with my daughter. Even though I gained 50 pregnancy pounds the scale bounced back within a couple of weeks of the delivery, but my hips had spread and my thighs had a new girth. At 19 I was ill prepared for this post-natal roundness and the comments stung. When I was ten I remember my mom being rushed to the hospital after ingesting a bottle of pills because my dad told her that her hips looked too big in the stretch-pants she was wearing!

My reaction was to find a book on dieting; the curves had to go! I tried the conventional diets of dry toast and black coffee, cottage cheese and grapefruits but my body remained curvy and soft. I'd always had a sweet tooth so when I read about a diet of all fruit I signed on. For five months I ate nothing but fruit. The immediate problem with a diet of all fruit was that I was always hungry. So, I ate more fruit. That was a problem too because after gorging myself with fruit I felt like an inflated balloon. Through the "stinking-thinking" of my best friend I discovered purging. I was in over my head , quickly overcome with feelings of shame and confusion, but as time passed the curves of motherhood gave way to the bony edges of my youth once again. With a bolstered confidence I decided to eat some "regular" food. The next day the scale was up fifteen pounds! I had become a lunatic dieter just like my mom and her sisters, but now I had digestion problems and a purging habit to boot. I tried diet pills and black coffee and by age 21 had nearly destroyed my nervous system.

Tired of starving myself I turned to "health food". I became a vegetarian for over a decade. I felt for the first time that maybe I was learning to eat properly. I read everything I got my hands on. The bad news was I gained 30 pounds and became anemic. I took up running. I didn't lose the weight but I felt less guilty about eating for a while. I had to stop running at age 25 when I got pneumonia, which was followed by several years of asthmatic bronchitis and severe allergies. I found myself reverting to old habits, starving, binging, purging. When conventional medicine didn't work I turned to holistic medicine and I miraculously reversed what would otherwise have soon been my demise. I ate all raw, and vegan for about a year too, but eventually found myself wanting cooked food.

For the next twenty years I followed a pattern of staying thin for a couple of years at a time by eating only one meal a day and working out at the gym six days a week. Between the "good" years I'd regain that same 30 pounds back like clockwork. Binging and purging urges gave way to my becoming physically and mentally disciplined. I prided myself on self-control. I took up a more intense yoga practice too and I felt at the top of my game. All this worked, until at age 43 I unexpectedly found myself pregnant again.

I gained nearly sixty pounds this time around, craving and eating red meat every day and my son weighed in over ten pounds at the birth! This time around I accepted my body's new post-natal condition and decided to be fat and happy for a while. I was so in love with my new son nothing could bother me! A friend loaned me a video camera to capture those precious moments on tape and it was then that I decided I wanted to focus on fitness again. My son was going to be three and I looked like a blob! So, I went back to what I knew, eating one meal a day and working out aggressively six days a week. It took me six months but I took off 30 pounds and looked great. I had a life-time membership at the gym now and a gym built up in my home. For another two years I basked in the compliments and starved myself thin.

As in the past, two years was about the breaking point; once again I was burned out on starving and working out six days a week. The difference this time around was that I didn't just gain that same old 30 pounds back. This time I gained 55 pounds and acquired a taste for inexpensive wine. I was edging towards age 49 when my "fat" clothes began to rip and the wine no longer held it's charm. I was tired of being of being fat but I was even less enthused about returning to a life of one meal a day and grueling hours of working out. I wanted a new plan.

It was 4 A.M. on a Sunday morning and I couldn't sleep. Provida's infomercial was on the channel I'd left the television on when I went to bed the night before, and I was drawn immediately to the tag phrase "Eat More and Exercise Less" and "Eat Healthy Foods". Boy, was this an abstract concept to my thinking. I ordered the kit right then and there. I KNEW this plan was going to work! I never doubted it. I embraced it like a life ring in a tumultuous sea. This plan would teach me to live completely differently than I had so far. Finally!

I read the manual, planned and prepared my food, joined some chat groups on the website. My results were immediate, four pounds the first week, four the next, three more the next week. I decided to start my own chat thread about three months later and 25 pounds lighter because I seemed to be the only person not going off the plan on the weekends. I yearned to meet others like me who were dedicated to working the plan and getting the results without setbacks. The thread has since become Provida's most active and has been going strong for two and a half years now.

I reached my goal in June of 2004, just 7 months after starting the plan. I have kept the weight off for more than two years now. "Leave no man behind" has kept me active on the chat thread and on my toes about keeping my own plan alive. I have made so many friends and was rewarded beyond my imagination when asked to participate in an infomercial. Of the 18 or so asked SEVEN of us were friends from the thread I started. What a great weekend that was!

One common success factor you will find among those of us who have reached our goals and have kept the weight off is that we didn't just go on a diet. We took the opportunity to get to know our bodies and ask ourselves the hard questions about why we were struggling. Our goals included redefining our lifestyles. We got honest with ourselves, posted starting photos in bikinis and took progress pictures throughout the process. When we did occasionally want to quit we looked at those pictures and they renewed our courage to go on. We learned to reward ourselves with non-food treats. We learned to respect ourselves and love ourselves, many of us for the first time in our lives. We stuck together. We didn't enable each other or accept excuses. Together we did it!

Thank you Michael, for believing in yourself because through you I was able to learn to believe in myself. Like that peace sign you drew in my "black book", I feel peace at last. I have the tools my family couldn't give me, now and at age 51, it's about time!

    HUGS!!!

Of COURSE! LOL!! I am subscribed to the Success Thread, and when I saw YOUR name, I HAD to read it ASAP!

We sure have covered a lot of ground.... and I would love to be LL with you!! You know why we always seem to have newbies on that thread? It's a no-fail no-excuse environment because of you! You are such a sweety, but not only that... I have noticed many "drill sargs" in my life are some of the best people to know, because they make the most difference in your life. They are REAL and are earnest in helping you progress and get to a better point in your life. YOU are eager for all of our success, and those tears? Yes, they certainly were tears of joy, and tears of pride. I knew that you and I have a common ground that we had to pick ourselves up from, and I am so glad that you put your success story out there.

It would definitely be great to meet in person, and get a real hug!

And GF, we are Rockin' Together!

J.C. I am so excited to see you as the August success story of the month.

    CONGRATULATIONS.

You are such a great role model. I feel so blessed to have come to know you and meet you in person. You are one heck of a lady, Lady in L.A.!

What you said here is so right on. In fact I really think it's the defining statement that truly leads to lifelong success:

    ORIGINAL: Lady In L.A.

One common success factor you will find among those of us who have reached our goals and have kept the weight off is that we didn't just go on a diet. We took the opportunity to get to know our bodies and ask ourselves the hard questions about why we were struggling. Our goals included redefining our lifestyles.

I am just so darn proud of you! WOO HOO!!!

    JC,
What an awesome story you have to share!! And what encouragement you offer!! And to other posters on this thread, Donna, Ellenor, Elaine....you all have REALLY got it together!!

JC, I am interested in where to find the thread you mentioned about being 100% on program and not cheating on weekends. I want to read and interact with people that really, really want this. I did very well at the beginning but have slipped a little....and then I read YOUR story.

Regarding pictures; I have before picutres and my 1st 6 weeks pictures...can someone tell me how to set them up so I can post them side by side....like I have seen in several of the posts on this thread?

JC, your story is so inspiring. Thank you for sharing it and congratulations on being "Miss August".

What an amazing story - thank you for sharing and congratulations on a job well done - you most certainly deserve this recognition as poster girl for August! - I have had my eye on you for a long time and have felt inspired by your transformation for some time now and admit to a bit of lurking of my own in your thread too You look totaly amazing, as I have told you before - and I still say no way would anyone ever take you for 50 ever! - shave off about 20 from that number and that would have been my guess! Marvolus darling .. simply marvolus! Barbara

Elaine, THANK YOU for those kind words...........and WOW, look at that new pic of you in the sarong.....OOOH LALA!!!! I am so glad we had a chance to do a "do over", hehe! Thank you for being so open minded!

Thank you Chuck! You stick with this plan and it'll stick with you!

Jenny, you definitely inspire ME! I will say Hi now and then, but I truly just enjoy reading all the posts. Thanks!

Awe, Lola, you are toooooo sweet! Thank you! I LOVE entertaining the troops!!! lol

Cindy, Cindy, Cindy!!! I must have had one huge brain fart eh? I couldn't believe it when I realized YOU were the Cindy from that FIRST responding post to my then new thread. WOWWY. And look at you now! I used to wander back to the early pages just to see if any of the early folks still posted and how much they had lost...guess you were away a while so I missed recognizing you when you came back, but YOU have been a PILLAR for the thread now for a while and what in the heck would anyone do without YOU? You are so important to everyone, including ME. I hope you will stay on well after getting to your own goal, because you are so kind and gracious and inspiring! THANK YOU Cindy!!!

Brenda, I have to laugh at that comment about am I sure that wasn't my mother's pic!!! BUT, it is SO true, when we drop the weight it's just ALARMING how aged we looked fat!!! Knowing how VAIN most of us ladies are, I'd think realizing how much more youthful we will look fit would make us RUN to lose that weight!!! And it isn't JUST the face, it's the entire lifestyle...mine sure did change for the better! THANKS!!!

Sharon, if you click on my screen name and then look to the right at the threads I've posted to you will find the Calling All 100% On Plan Eaters, Not Cheaters thread, click there and go to the last page, last post and ask your questions about putting pics in your gallery...we have some real handy sorts in there, besides being a great support group! Thank you!!!

Lauren, I have ALWAYS felt we ARE sisters, right from the first day online meeting you! That's why I felt so comfortable asking YOU to go to my house and help me lift that darn van seat! LOL!!! YOU ROCK girl, and you made me tear up this week when I learned you quit smoking! WOW! You are GOING TO get to goal, and you are going to keep the weight off too! I KNOW THIS! You are MY idol! And, by the way...I'll go buy a new sofa bed for the living room if you are really going to come out and help me declutter!!!LOL!!! That's all you need, one more thing on your list of to do's, hehehe...as if raising twins and tending to your hubby weren't enough. I LOVE YOU GIRL! Thanks you!!!

Skinny Mini....Thank you!! You are well on your way, keep up the good work!
