Wow, what a journey!  From a size 18 to a size 8! Down 34 pounds in my first 90 days even with Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays falling within that first 90 days. AND lost a total of 50 pounds and 40 inches! So what did I do? I followed the plan! I joined the forums, made some friends. I owe so much of this Michael, the BMOS', and to all of my online friends for giving me the tools and the support program I needed (6WBMO) to change my life.

I first started 6wbmo in the spring of 2007. I lost about 30 pounds and stopped. So all of those of you out there for your second, third, or xth try, THERE IS HOPE!  So why did I stop? Because I was at the weight I always believed would be my weight. And I was on a diet…so what do you do when you reach the end of your diet? You go back to eating the way you did before you started your diet. Just like I did on Weight Watchers. Just like I did after Atkins. Just like I did after every other fad diet that I tried. I would say just like I did on Nutrisystems except I never lost any weight on Nutrisystems. THAT was an expensive lesson.

I think I am like many of you….years of under eating had caused my system to run in constant starvation mode. I remember one time, I was so frustrated with what I weighed and what I was eating, I kept a journal for two weeks and I took it to my Doctor the next time I went in. And I thrust the journal at him and said ‘WHY? Why do I weigh so much? This is what I eat!’ He looked over my list and said ‘because you don’t eat enough.’ I was too stunned to even reply. I TOTALLY did not expect THAT answer. I never asked him another questions about it! I was blown away. But when I got home….I had no idea how to do anything different. I had no more information.

The first time I saw the infomercial, I was just flipping channels and doing something else and I hadn’t noticed what was playing until I heard the one gal say, I weigh less now than I did in High School.  I guess that appealed to me because I could get down to my college weight but I have never been back to my High School weight! Well, that caught my attention and then Michael made that statement, ‘that we each have different body types and expecting to use the same method for everyone to lose weight makes no sense.’ Well that hit home! I had about 30 pounds to lose to get back to where I was the year before but I think I ordered the program because I had hope that maybe this time, I could lose even more than that. Maybe I could get back to my high school weight!

The first time, I followed the 6WBMO diet. I lost my 30 pounds and stopped. I think for several reasons. First this was another ‘diet.’ Second, I was eating nasty foods….bland tasteless chicken breasts, disgusting egg whites that stuck horribly to the pan! It was painful and not something I ever even thought of maintaining.

Then in November 2008, I remembered why I ordered the program. And I started again with an entirely different approach. I wasn’t on a diet! I was on a discovery mission! My mission? To find out how to get my body out of starvation mode. To find out what foods MY body wanted. To find out how to cook and eat in a way that would make me healthy, that would let me be happy with my weight and LOVE the food I eat.

I remember one of my early promises with myself. I was not going to eat a single thing I did not like! I would NOT eat nasty chicken breasts. I would not make myself eat egg white omelets with no flavor and left half of the product in the pan! I would find a way to make the foods I loved that were on plan. (See that is the positive side for this not being your first time on the plan. You already KNOW that you can make nearly anything in an on plan version!) There was never a doubt in my mind that I could do just that. Find ways to make foods that I like that are on plan.

So that was my focus. What do I like? Is it on plan? If not, how can I make it on plan? I remember asking myself once, so you are never going to eat another piece of cake? Another pizza? And the answer? Absolutely NOT! I am not saying I will never eat the foods that I used to love. I will! BUT I will not eat them everyday. And just for today, I am not going to eat that. Just for today…I am going to chose something that I enjoy that is on plan. When I get to goal, I can chose to eat whatever I want but it will be something special. It is not my everyday anymore.

As I started on this journey with my new attitude I noticed a couple of things….1. I had forgotten how much I always loved fresh fruit and vegetables. As a child, I lived on those. I didn’t care for meat and I especially did NOT like beef! 2. Once I was past all the toxins and addictions, most of the foods I thought I loved….well they just aren’t as good as I remember! (I mean, I do NOT remember having to pour the oil and grease off my pizza before I ate it!)  3. When I have fresh fruit and veggies in the house…I look forward to eating some chicken breast and my favorite fruit for my MMS! I am actually planning how I can get to the meal where I can have fresh rasberries and some plan protein. So I can actually TASTE the berries.  Wow what an eye opener. I wasn’t scamming on how to get a fix of food that was off plan…I was scamming how to get fresh fruit and totally on plan! Not only is it tasty, it gives me so much more energy. And the weight is just a bonus!

I learned many things! Too many to review them all here. But there were some keys that made this plan easy for me.

Be prepared! For Everything…running to the store and you KNOW you will only be 30 minutes…and 2 hours later you missed your meal?  TAKE your food! Don’t argue – just take it. You can put it back in the fridge when you don’t need it!

Variety! I always had several foods ready for any meals. Why? Because that is how I usually eat. I don’t know what I am going to want tonight for dinner, so why would I expect to know now? Besides when the craving hit, I needed to have options!

If I had a craving of something I wanted, I would try substitution….Oh yeah, that lasagna really looks good…but what can I have for dinner that is on plan and I like as well or tastes the same?...oh! I have some OP spaghetti made…or I could have BBQ chicken!..OH OH !! but I also have the pumpkin pie or the pineapple upside down cake that I could have….and very quickly it wasn’t about what I could not have, it was about all the choices of what I COULD have!

If substitution didn’t work (which was seldom) then I would use the delay tactic….OK, yep, you can have that….this weekend…or tomorrow night…funny how the next day, the craving just isn’t the same. And when the ‘what’ changed, my timeframe started over too. So today I don’t want lasagna, I want a PB and J….OK, you can have that on Sat if you still want it.

    OR

Journal what you eat. How else will you ever know what speeds up your metabolism/weightloss and what slows you down?  Besides, it’s amazing how quickly things add up when you aren’t watching!

Find a group in the forums to join. Someone to share your successes, failures, joys and fears with.  Not only are they a huge help with problems and sharing their experience, posting regularly keeps me focused. Each time I am in the forums, I KNOW why I am following this plan! I don’t loose sight of it in the daily grind if I stop in daily. I cannot tell you what a huge help the other members here are. They have so much to share! They are so supportive. I make the choice at each meal to eat on plan, they make the journey fun! They keep me going when I get discouraged give me a kick in the pants when I am being my own worst enemy!

So I set my goal at 175, I felt skinny at 175.  That was lower than what I ever believed I could reach when I did the plan the first time. I stopped at 185 – not skinny but not so fat that I couldn’t stand it either…so this time….I said,

    What if?

What if you could get to 165? I did not really believe I could…but what if?

    OMG! I would wear a size 8!  A SIZE 8!!

What if I could shop at Costco and expect the clothes to fit me?

What if I could have normal size thighs!  Ummm – NO! That AINT gonna happen. Babe- you have been a skier, a bicycler, a dancer, a field event tracker, there is NO WAY you will EVER have normal thighs! NEVER!...yeah I know.

But what if?  Ok so I hit 165. I do wear a size 8. I pinch myself to make sure it isn’t a dream! And the thighs…they aren’t mine…I still have some toning to do in the upper thigh area…but seriously, when I am working out, when I look down at them – they aren’t mine! Mine are not this small!

Did I reach that ultimate goal? No. I didn’t hit my high school weight - Yet. I needed my mind to accept my body and now…the new goal! What if I really could weigh what I did in High school?

So let me ask you….what is your ‘what if?’

Congratulations!!! Thanks for sharing your story. I had actually never thought of a "what if" while doing this plan. Like you, I had done this plan once before had success then went off. I just decided that this plan made way too much sense not to do & have decided to make it a lifestyle. But now you have the wheels turning.

Great inspirational story Dee, Congrats on being the May pinup gal!!

I say, if you want to get to your high school weight - go for it.  I weigh what i did when i was 16 thanks to this program, but with lots more muscle and self confidence!  I feel great (and to think I thought i was fat back then....)

Dee, I am sitting here reading your story and crying.  I woke up this morning and was another 5 lbs lighter than I was last week.  And, I thought to myself, "What if I hadn't gotten back on plan 3weeks ago, I never would have lost the 14 I had put on.  Now, I lost 17 lbs lbs in the last 3 weeks.  Your story really hit home with me in many aspects.  Congratulations.  This is all so exciting.

for the vote of confidence Janet! I am happy where I am at this weight but I think I will go for the High School weight and then see how that feels.

Awww, Karen! You're the best!  I have so much to for! For traveling this journey with me, for allowing me to be your ARA, for being my cheerleader and helping me keep my sanity when life throws me curve balls!

    Dee,

Congrats on being the May success story of the month.  Your story is very inspiring and I am glad to have been through your journey on the Phat Chicks thread.  You are so right about the support on these forums.  I would not have made it this far or continued on my present journey.  It just truly amazes me each time to think I have been on this program now for almost 18 months.

The weight I am now, I have not been at for over 20 years which is late elementary/eary middle school time for me.  So I am waiting to see what a goal weight will end up being for me.  I will not know that for another 40 pounds or so.

Just give me time----I too will become a success story in the future!

    Pam

    Hi Dee,

Wow!! You are always so inspiring on Phat Chicks and here . . .  tears in my eyes as I am reminded how amazing life really is.  Thank you for a beautiful story of inspiration and hope for all of us.  It is amazing how our tastes for certain food do change isn't it?  Pizza actually makes me sick now!  Too much grease, I guess...

Keep up the good work.  You are an example of the best of 6WBMO!!

    Cheers,

    Melissa
