    Dear Prospective Students:

It is my honor to inform you that you have been accepted to New Body University. We are delighted to find so many qualified applicants. As a student at NBU, you will find fine living accommodations, experienced advisors, and friends from around the world. But more importantly you’ll be receiving a first rate education. Regardless of your degree track (6WBMO or SMART), you’ll learn all you need to know to make this life style change a permanent one.

We have high academic standards and we expect all our students to attend class (post often), participate in classroom projects and assignments (challenges), and most importantly maintain excellent grade point averages (earn your credits). We also require that our staff attend continuing education classes (stay on plan too) to ensure that we always have the best and the brightest. Each student should have their textbooks (6WBMO black book or SMART workbook) and study it regularly. We want all our students to do their best and set a goal to be listed on the Honor Roll each week.

Your Resident Advisor, BackAtLast, will be here shortly. RUSH week begins  March 23rd and you will begin earning your credits on that day. On behalf of the faculty and staff of NBU, I welcome you. Please note that an official copy of the Student Handbook is below.

    Student Handbook

As a new student at New Body University, there are a number of rules and guidelines of which you need to be very familiar.

    1. Everyone following the 6WBMO, SMART plan, or who is Living Lean is accepted for admission into this University game. If you have any medical modifications (doctor suggested changes to either the food or exercise portion) please report them to your RA via PM.

    2. NBCC enrollments will go through the end of Week 4 (April 12th). Credits will be earned through April 26th and Final credits are to be reported by students ON April 27th.

    3. You will be earning academic credits for following the 6WBMO or SMART plan guidelines (food—7, water—7, accelerated fat loss—5, and body sculpting—2). Here at NBU, we have high academic standards. Each student should have their textbooks (6WBMO black book or SMART workbook) and study it regularly. We want all our students to do their best and set a goal to be listed on the Honor Roll each week. Those students who earn 100% of possible individual credits (21) each week will be listed on the Provost’s List. Those students who earn 90% (19-20) of individual credits each week will be listed on the Dean’s List. Those students who earn 80% (17-18) of individual credits each week will be listed on the Honorable Mention List. All students who are on the honor roll will add the appropriate icon to their signature. Students who fail to achieve a minimum of 60% (13) of possible individual credits in a week will be sent to Study Hall. Students in Study Hall will be assigned a tutor (someone who has had some success to buddy with) during their study hall period. If they are able to bring their grades back up the following week they will no longer be required to attend Study Hall. If a student is in Study Hall for two consecutive weeks, additional support will be offered.

    4. You’ll also be tracking your inch losses as described in your plan. Your Resident Advisor will have more information for your regarding this.

    5. There will be one thread for NBCC. You are allowed to visit all threads, but attend class (post) only in your own dorm’s thread. You may post all the motivation, encouragement, support, etc. Anything you would like to post that is from any other thread should be done so with full credit to the author via quotes, etc.

    6. You are allowed to have excused absences from class but you need to clear it with your Resident Advisor prior to the absence. Your Resident Advisor will go over the details with you in your dorm.

    7. In an effort to ensure that all recipes posted in NBU are on-plan and that we are providing our students with only the best advice and information we are no longer going to allow students to post recipes in the dorms that have not yet been approved by Provida. Having your recipe approved is a simple process. You can email it directly to recipes@provida.com. This should be done only by the person who created or discovered the recipe and not forwarded by a dorm chef, RA, or anyone else. Once you’ve had your recipe approved, then you’re welcome to share it with your dorm mates, etc. As always, students are allowed to post recipes they discover in the Recipe Exchange (or post the link to the recipe) but those found in the Makeover America Cookbook are not to be shared online. If you are sharing a recipe from an outside source, please include that source so that proper credit can be given. Even if you have made some minor tweaks to the original recipe, we still need to cite the source. We hope these guidelines will help you and your fellow students get the most from this experience.

    Facilities Tour

New Body University has a host of great places for the students, faculty and staff to use for gathering information and maximizing the game experience.

    NBU 101—The NBU Entrance Course
This is a place where potential students can go to learn how to post, edit, and otherwise navigate the Provida Forums.

    NBU09 Spring--Provost's Office
This is the official administration office. Any questions or concerns you have about NBU can be posted here.

    NBU09 Spring--Registrar's Office
This is the place to go for enrollments and dorm assignments. It should be the first stop for new students on campus.

    NBU09 Spring--Student Records Office
This is the place for reporting weekly credit grades. Only the RAs (or an appointed person from each conference) should post in their conference color here.

    NBU09 Spring--Food Services Office

This is the place to post recipes and ask questions related to the food portion of the 6WBMO and SMART programs. Students from all dorms are welcome to post here anytime.

    NBU09 Spring--Quad

This is a general meeting place for student throughout campus—just a relaxed place for open conversation and fun. Students from all dorms are welcome to post here anytime.

NBU09 Spring—Fat Burning and Body Sculpting Bulletin Board
This is the place where exercise and fitness related tips and information will be available to everyone on campus. The primary focus of the Locker Room will be on fitness and well being using the principles of the 6WBMO. Information on different exercises, cardio and how to live a more active lifestyle will be discussed.

    NBU—Residence Halls
This is where the fun is. Students are assigned to resident halls. They are not allowed to post in halls other than their own. They can “snoop” in others to get ideas, etc. but not post there.

    Enjoy wandering our campus!

Welcome!  You’ve arrived at New Body University Community College (NBCC).  I am Michele/BackAtLast, your Resident Advisor (RA) for this winter term.  I’m so excited to be here with you all and look forward to a great term. Let’s start this term (and this year) out right.  I’m here to help you get to Living Lean, or closer than you are right now.  I ask nothing of you that I am not ready, willing and able to do myself.   A little about me.  My name BackAtLast, is because I am back at last after a hiatus from 6WBMO.  I originally lost 82# and somehow, I found some of what I lost.  This time, I will not lose the pounds.  I will give them away to a needy person or shed them.  I will NOT find them again.  I am back on track and will be as accountable to you as I hope that you will be to me. NBU and NBCC is a great way to get motivated, stay motivated, meet new friends and shed some unwanted pounds along the way. I’m here to help you however I can.  You can always reach me here in the dorm or by PM  (private message). Let’s do this together.  Please take a few minutes to read the Student Handbook that is posted by the provost on page one in our dorm.    Please take advantage of our new NBU 101 thread Click here to enter NBU101 Thread…it is a great resource to learn some basics of using the forums.  I urge everyone to head over there b/c the Provost has some really great lessons on navigating the forums and NBU.So, everyone get comfortable, explore the dorm and find a room to your liking. Feel free to post pictures and share your space.  Visit the campus public buildings (Quad, Food Services, Cardio/Toning Building, Provost Office & Student Records) when you have a chance.  Now that I have chatted your ear off, let’s find out about each one of you. A “Get To Know You” survey will follow this post. Please take the time to fill it out and read all about your new dorm mates. I look forward to getting to know all of you and having a great semester together

So, I've thrown alot at you all at once.

Lots more to come, so dive on in, the water's devine

    NBU Spring 2009 Contract
    an In-Dorm Icon Assignment

    NBU is about commitment.

    So is weight loss!

If you put something in writing

you are more likely to reach that accomplishment.

If you read what you wrote each day,

it is more likely you will achieve it.

If you read it aloud each day, it's even more likely.

When you write out your contract below
you have the option of adding in your goal for this semester.

When you read your contract each morning,

you will automatically read your goal as well!

It's good to keep that goal front and center.

Are you ready to earn your first icon of the new semester?

For those of you who complete the NBU Contract
before the end of Week One, you will receive the following
    icon for your signature.

Please print the following post and place it on the fridge or closet door or somewhere where you can see it each day. Possibly even on the mirror in the bathroom or by the computer. It will serve as a reminder of the commitment you have made to NBU (and to yourself!) for the next six weeks.

    NBU works best
when everyone gives to the group and takes what they need.
So do it, make that commitment to jump in feet first!
The more you give to your dormmates
the more you will receive in the end.
You may also find that the more you help your dormmates,
    the more you will LOSE

by... Incorporating at least five days of cardio and two days of sculpting into my daily routine. (If a requested Medical Leave is necessary, I will make sure that I keep my body as active as possible to make up for the regular paced walking &/or toning that I cannot do.)

by... Drinking 100 ounces of water per day.

by... Actively participating in the dorm Assignments & Activities, In-Dorm Challenges & Dorm to Dorm Challenges.

IN HONOR OF SPINACH FESTIVAL DAY TODAY!

    __________________________________________________________________________
    Spinach Salad with Strawberry Vinaigrette

    __________________________________________________________________________
From member magickalkisses1954 Here's a tasty salad for your holiday table.

BMOS Note: If you limit your portion of dressing to 1 or 2 tablespoons per serving, you may consider it a freebie and use it for any meal. If using a larger quantity, please consult the chart under the recipe.

    • spinach leaves (washed and stems trimmed)
    • cherry or grape tomatoes

    Strawberry Vinaigrette

    • 1 cup red wine vinegar
    • 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
    • ¼ cup (more or less to taste, depending upon sweetness of berries) Splenda
    • 1 pound fresh strawberries

Wash and slice strawberries. Throw everything in a blender and blend away until smooth. If too vinegary, add more Splenda. If still too vinegary add an additional tablespoon of balsamic vinegar.

Toss salad with vinaigrette and serve. You could also garnish salad with a few sliced strawberries as well.

Which plastic water bottles don't leach chemicals?

    Featured in:

Choose your water bottles very carefully in order to prevent chemicals in the plastic from leaching into your water.

Plastic water bottles are very convenient for carting water around when we are on the go, as they don't break if we drop them. However, it is worth paying attention to the type of plastic your water bottle is made of, to ensure that the chemicals in the plastic do not leach into the water. If you taste plastic, you are drinking it, so get yourself another bottle.

To be certain that you are choosing a bottle that does not leach, check the recycling symbol on your bottle. If it is a #2 HDPE (high density polyethylene), or a #4 LDPE (low density polyethylene), or a #5 PP (polypropylene), your bottle is fine. The type of plastic bottle in which water is usually sold is usually a #1, and is only recommended for one time use. Do not refill it. Better to use a reusable water bottle, and fill it with your own filtered water from home and keep these single-use bottles out of the landfill.

Unfortunately, those fabulous colourful hard plastic lexan bottles made with polycarbonate plastics and identified by the #7 recycling symbol, may leach BPA. Bisphenol A is a xenoestrogen, a known endocrine disruptor, meaning it disturbs the hormonal messaging in our bodies. Synthetic xenoestrogens are linked to breast cancer and uterine cancer in women, decreased testosterone levels in men, and are particularly devastating to babies and young children. BPA has even been linked to insulin resistance and Type 2 Diabetes. For more of the science on the effects of BPA on our endocrine system etc. see these studies: Environmental Health Perspectives Journal. Nalgene, the company that manufactures the lexan water bottles also makes #2 HDPE bottles in the same sizes and shapes, so we have a viable alternative. Order one at Nalgene.

Unfortunately, most plastic baby bottles and drinking cups are made with plastics containing Bisphenol A. In 2006 Europe banned all products made for children under age 3 containing BPA, and as of Dec. 2006 the city of San Franscisco followed suit. In March 2007 a billion-dollar class action suit was commenced against Gerber, Playtex, Evenflo, Avent, and Dr. Brown's in Los Angeles superior court for harm done to babies caused by drinking out of baby bottles and sippy cups containing BPA. So, to be certain that your baby is not exposed, use glass bottles.

Check the recycling numbers on all your plastic food containers as well, and gradually move to storing all food in glass or ceramic.

Store water in glass or brass if possible, and out of direct sunlight.

    Hello NBCC!

    Kids Week

Last week we were all talking about our dream teams.  How we need to get a core group of people in OUR corner to help us meet our goals.  The people in your corner don't necessarily need to be family and they don't need to be accountability partners.

The dream team really can include the Produce Manager at your local grocery store or a couple of local farmers at the Farmers Market. Your dream team may include your cable company's ON Demand Channel where you use Fit TV once a week in place of doing cardio outside or in a gym.  Telling your cable company that you use that programming is key to your success, so they are a part of your dream team. Just because the week is over doesn't mean that your Dream Team just fades away.  Keep adjusting your team, tweaking the players as needed to get the maximum benefits.

This week we are morphing into kids!

We are going to find the kid inside, run around like a kid, have the energy of a child, enjoy life without the adult worries (for a little while, at least) and to play games!

Do you know that writen piece called "All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten" by Robert Fulgham?  He says that we learned to play fair, share everything, don't hit, put things back where we found them and to live a balanced life by playing, napping, learning, looking, painting, singing and dancing...among other things.

Children get upset for a very small amount of time and then just move on.  If they don't like the way the broccoli turned out, they don't fuss about it for days to come.  They don't worry everytime they need to make broccoli - they have already forgotten that it turned out less than stellar that one time.

Kids love to experiment.  They love Do-Overs.  They love to sing and dance and be silly and laugh!  This week we are going to get that kid inside of us to teach the older part of us to let go a little.  The 6wbmo and the Smart Program aren't going out the window.  We aren't going to be lax on the timing of meals or what is considered a POP meal - what we are going to do is be more forgiving of ourselves, to make our cardio time fun time, to quit making this lifestyle change one of will power and make it an adventure!

Have you ever noticed how kids really do like to help.  Usually it's the youngest ones that want to help the most.  The older they get, the more of a chore they think it is.  (Kids!)  I just recently had the door held open for me by a very excited 3 year old.  She would have stood there for an hour if her mother would have let her.  I know of a 5 year old that thinks that vacuuming is the best thing ever.

Personally, I love to do dishes (I am one giant 3 year old.)  I love to play with the soap and watch the water run into the sink making mountains out of the bubbles.  I like to stack the dishes in the dish drainer and see how high I can get everything before I have to set out a few dishtowels for the remaining pieces that wouldn't quite fit.  I make it a game and I make it a time to enjoy and reflect on the day.

This is going to be a great week in NBU.  I hope that you find that kid inside and allow yourself a chance to be a total goofball at least once this week.

    Enjoy!

Meridith,  Jump on in, the waters fine and you will LOVE this journey!

Deborah,  you too will love this journal.

Let's get started.  After you do the Getting to Know you, please post your beginning stats.  I really need this by Tuesday morning.  Then, each Monday you will post stats too.

I'll have more for you soon.  Let me know if you have questions and let me know how I can help!
