From member paula_j_m. I have been on 6WBMO for 7 ½ weeks now. Have love 34 pounds and feeling great. One recipe that we have eaten at my house for a very long time is "Old Fashioned Sloppy Joe." I have tweaked the simple recipe to make what I believe is an OP version. My very, very picky teenager saw my journal of the meals/snacks eaten this week and she wanted to know when I had Sloppy Joe. I had just enough left in the refrigerator for her to try and she asked me to make it again for her!!

    • 1 lb. ground turkey breast
    • 1 onion
    • on-plan ketchup (see Condiments Section, this forum)
    • Sweet-n-Low brown sugar (or any of the other brown sugar substitutes)
    • (BMOS Note: Brown Sugar Twin is a commonly used choice by many of our members, available in the baking aisle of many markets as well as online. Do NOT substitute Brown Sugar Splenda, however, as this product contains sugar.)

Chop the onion and then brown the ground turkey with the onion. Crumble the turkey. After browned, add the on-plan ketchup. I put enough to cover all of the turkey plus enough for a little liquid. Then add the Sweet-n-Low brown sugar to taste. I personally like mine sweet tasting. This was such a great change for snack at work! It would also be good with the Potato Chips recipe in the forum (see Side Carb recipes, this forum.)

    Compatible with Body Type:
    Breakfast A-B-C-D-E
    Morning Snack A-B-C-D-E
    Lunch A-B-C-D-E
    Afternoon Snack A-B-C-D-E
    Dinner A-B-C-D-E
    PM Snack A-D-E

This Recipe Contains: Protein B, Free Veggie

How do I measure out a serving?

Paula-congratulations on getting a recipe approved! This looks like something DH would try (he's very picky)!
My question is this: What do you use for buns?

I just ate it without a bun. It is good, though, with those really sliced thin potatoes cooked in the oven to make the potato chips. I honestly felt like I was cheating to have the two of them together.

Also, I have found that it's better when the OP ketchup has been made in the refrigerator a while. Once I made the ketchup and then immediately used it to make the sloppy joe. It wasn't as good as when I let the ketchup sit in the refrigerator for a few days.

I made this last night with the guiltless french fries. It was great. My DS (he's 9) loved it. He wants to have it again. He ate his on a bun, mine was on a bed of lettuce.
    Thanks for the great recipe!!!

    Hi Paula
I really want to try your Sloppy Joe's. I never have been a cook until I started this program. I need the crayons pulled out for me please. How much ketchup and brown sugar do you use?

"Adding enough to cover the turkey plus a little for liquid" doesn't work for you, huh? Let me see if I can get a guesstimate from the recipe author for you.

    Watch this space. (or thereabouts.)

Me again. I heard from the recipe author this morning. She stated that she uses one of the on-plan ketchup recipes from the Condiments forum (she didn't tell me which one) and basically uses all of it. As for the brown sugar substitute quantity (and puh-LEEZE be sure not to buy Brown Sugar Splenda because it contains real sugar) she states she likes it really sweet, so she uses the equivalent of about 1/2 cup.

Since we all have different tastes, you may wish to start out with much less than that, stir it in and let it cook for a bit, then taste to see if you wan to add more before proceeding. (Also worth noting, some of our on-plan ketchup recipes may be sweeter than others. )

Paula also stressed that she feels this tastes much better if it's left overnight in the fridge before serving-- that the extra time soaking up the flavor of the onions, ketchup and brown sugar really makes the flavor even better.
