    THE WRECK AND THE RECLUSE

Looking at a weird title and wondering, will the story that follows be as strange. Very seldom will you come across stories more poignant than those of true life.

To be honest I find it laughable that my life can be summed up in a title such as the one listed above, Tragedy produces many things and in me it produced character and it is here where my story begins.

Being overweight for me was "accepted" almost like a comfortable friend. Yes, there was teasing and yes the thought of buying "normal" fashionable clothes was not even an option for me. I have no excuses, I just accepted it.

You will find me to be very humerous. To overcome the "sadness" (no word to really describe what I was really feeling) I would use humor. Examples include calling myself "horizontally gifted" or "vertically challenged". I am a very strong Christian, first and foremost. Paul declares in the New Testament that we are to "buffet" our body and bring it into subjection, ha ha..I thought it said "buffet" as in EAT. Ha ha ha

Sometimes however you can go on in your "comfortable life until...the time comes when the pain will become worse than the pleasure.

For me that occurred July 9 2003. On my way home from an Organic Chemistry class where I just made my own acetylsalicylic acid (I am a science teacher) I was hit from the side of my car and pushed into oncoming traffic...my life never to be the same.

The weight I did have made it hard for the firefighters to put me on the stretcher....the belts not fitting without the use of extensions. If I am to find the positive in this I guess it would be that the weight did add padding to my knees and legs that impacted into my dashboard......

Checklist......over 300 pounds both legs in splints that had to be orthopedically ordered because of the size of my legs. My left hand broken in two places and a totaled car. Yes, that was my life.

Many friends and family came to my aide. Very good food brought to me, fast food, cakes and pop. I could not move and found nothing to be happy about.....FIRST MISTAKE.......FIRST MISTAKE...excuse me did I say FIRST MISTAKE....

After 3 weeks of being away from home...my second night at home, while asleep I was awoke very light with a burning, biting, piercing sensation in my right arm. I became sick and immediately called a friend closeby. When she came I was gray in color and had a temp of 104. The doctors diagnosis, brown recluse spider bite. A skin biopsy immediately performed. Brown recluse spiders are poisonous and I was now also on medicine that people take for leprosy.

Checklist now....NO WORKING APPENDGES....NO WORKING ARMS OR LEGS.

I know find myself 342 pounds. Splints, braces and if you are familiar with brown recluse spider bites a scar under my right arm.

Scars will end up being your biggest ministry. What are scars....WOUNDS THAT HEAL.

After seeing a very close friend experience much success on a diet program that seemed to work well for her, the results were obvious. I not only asked her about it, I went to the provida website and overnight ordered the packet. (by the way I am type A)

That was on November 16th of 2003. In two years I have lost 226 pounds. For the first time in I can not even remember, I feel "normal". Not only may I now go in a normal clothing store to by nice clothes, but I don't even have to go to the "Plus" or "oversize" section. I was a size 32 (5X) and am now a size 4/6.

I want my life to scream that there is no point ever to low. My life is a walking example that there is nothing impossible. The beauty of it all is how much you learn about yourself during this journey. Incredible how tragedy brings strength.

I am a living testimony. With no surgery, no trainer and no reality tv show watching my every move. It was the hardest and most loneliest thing I have ever done.

I pray this will bring movtivation and inspiration. The joy I feel when I see the face of students who have not seen me since I have lost such a drastic amount, the people around me who are doing the same program. Buying wonderful clothes and something else I enjoy....the look on my relatives faces during this Thanksgiving.....I am excited about taking the family pics this year..ha ha ha

This program changed me, saved me.

    Jamie,

You are truly an inspiration. It is unbelieveable what all you have been through. But it definetly back ups the saying that you can do anything if you put your mind to it. I wish you only the best in life, because you definetly deserve it !! Good luck to you in all your life endeavors.

    Jamie-

I have lived my life saying that everything happens for a reason. I read you story and knew that I read it for a reason...it will continue to inspire me. I feel the tragedy, even though it was a hard one, happened for a reason. It allowed you to help yourself and ultimately helpothers...us!

Thank you for sharing your story. Keep us updated as to how you are.

    Jamie,
I guess you know what your purpose in life is. Your story is such an inspiration that I have to stop feeling sorry for myself and be thankful for what I have and who I am. You didn't keep your light under a basket and I for one will keep on keeping on until I have this success too.
Have a fantastic life with your new found body.

    Jamie,

Thank you for sharing your story. So much of it has touched me and encouraged me. I can only imagine how hard you had to work each and every day to get from where you started to where you are now. You mentioned that it was a hard and lonely journey. I know that this website is here for mutual support and encouragement, and while that is fabulous (and something I haven't been using as much as I need to), a weight loss change is something only we can do for ourselves. In the moments of temptation, where the comfort of food is the easiest thing to turn to, facing the joy or sorrow head on and not giving into it is so hard. It is something I have been failing at lately, but you have inspired me to remember what it's all about.

Although I hadn't recognized your New Testament quote, it is a good reminder that to lose who love God, we are called to make our bodies surrender to our will, not allow our will to surrender to the demands of the body (like when it seems to be telling me it needs sugar... I need to beat that into submission!).

Congratulations to you, and I wish you perseverance and joy as you maintain this new body and lifestyle.

    Becca
