When You Know Better, You Do Better
It's amazing how easy it can be to live in denial. I had a gift for justifying poor choices because in my mind there was always another day to get serious about dealing with my health. In the meantime, I kept on doing what I was doing, which is what got me up to 285 pounds.
For as long as I can remember I've had weight issues. The only time I made an organized effort to do anything about it (unless you count wishing for a magic pill as an organized effort!) was in high school when I lost 25 pounds through Weight Watchers. I had no problem finding those pounds and gaining them back by the time I was in college, and had continued on that path of self-destruction for years thereafter. That is, until July 7th, 2003... the first day with Michael Thurmond as my personal health manager, and the start of a truly life-changing transformation.
There were so many things in day-to-day living that I was not able to do comfortably, or to do at all. I was 29 and felt really hopeless. One night I happened to see the last few minutes of the 6WBM infomercial. I saw just enough of it to peak my interest, but not enough to know exactly what it was. Then, about 2 months later, I was watching "EXTREME MAKEOVER". Michael Thurmond was their fitness expert and he was helping a woman lose 20 pounds before they allowed her to get liposuction, and for some reason he looked familiar.
The connection didn't occur to me until a month later (June 2003) when I caught the infomercial again. I recognized him from Extreme Makeover, which brought me back to that very first time I saw him, and I was glad to catch the entire infomercial that time around . I figured that he must really know something if he was able to help the woman on the show get to her goal so quickly, and besides that, everything he talked about made sense to me. I was sold!
Around that time I was talking to a friend and broke down about my feelings of desperation and my frustration with my weight. The loss of hope was devastating to me. My weight was something I never discussed with anyone. At one point during our conversation she said that in all the years we have known each other, she had no idea I was ever bothered by my own appearance; she loved me unconditionally and didn't really see me as the person I was on the outside. I realized that one of my best friends never knew how destroyed I felt on the inside because I was in such avoidance of it myself that until that very conversation, I could never open up to anyone about it. Enough was enough. Shortly after that I was leaving for a vacation with some friends, so I went ahead & ordered 6WBM. I knew it would be waiting for me upon my return.
I was blown away during my vacation as I took mental notes of the things I held back from doing because of how I felt about myself. We were at the beach and my friends were in bikinis. I was wearing cargo pants & a boy-cut (wider and longer sleeves to hide my upper arms) T-shirt. Let me write that again so you can really visualize it. I was ON THE BEACH in pants & a t-shirt... next to babes in bikinis! We were walking on the Santa Monica Pier and my friends were in shorts and fitted tank tops. Again, I was in pants and a big t-shirt. We went to a wonderful restaurant at a fancy hotel and my friends were in cute feminine outfits. I was sporting my usual "going out" look-- pretty much anything black & shapeless. I could no longer live inside that dark prison I had created for myself. I was ready for a change, but who would ever believe that eating sensibly & working out for a reasonable amount of time would actually work? I had the mentality that I would have to sustain myself on salads and exercising until it felt as if my lungs would explode in order to lose weight, but was willing to give "eating more and exercising less" a try.
I started my new lifestyle (and that's what it is--a whole new lifestyle, not a diet!) right after getting back from that vacation just over a year ago. I can't believe the change in my attitude, my outlook on life, and my BODY! I could cry just thinking of all the years I've struggled and tortured myself and am so thankful that what sounded like a do-able plan actually works.
Don't be fooled, this is not the easy path. I was on the easy path for a long time. The easy path is the one you take to the refrigerator or the vending machine at work. The easy path is when you walk fast past a mirror to avoid seeing your own reflection. The easy path is when you stop at a drive-thru on your way home from work and secretly eat fast food before getting home to have dinner with your family. The easy path is wasting years of your life wishing for a magic pill. The easy path is the one you've been on for long enough that it has brought you HERE, and if you're reading my story, you're probably ready for a new lifestyle that will challenge you in all the best ways and make you a better, healthier person.
Be hopeful because 6WBM gives you direction and all the tools you need to reach your goal. You are given a plan to follow. The key to success is that you have to FOLLOW the plan you are given. You cannot fail if you stick to it. I'm going to write that again for those of you skimming this. YOU CANNOT FAIL IF YOU STICK TO THIS PLAN! The people you see on the 6WBM informercial are real people. I have gotten to know some of them through the chat forums on this very website. The photos on this website are real. There are no pasted heads on model bodies around here.
I am lucky to have a fantastic support system of family & friends but what I really love about the chat forums is that at anytime I can look up a recipe or pop into any of the boards and post a question or comment, and I've always heard back from people with an answer to a question or some inspiration.
Speaking of inspiration... I have to thank FeistyElizabeth, who was the August 2003 Success Story. She became an integral part of my initial determination to follow through with this new lifestyle. I totally related to HER story, and consider myself lucky to have had the opportunity to get to know her as a person. She helped me recognize that although this path is never easy, it's ALWAYS worth it! Thanks E! Lastly, BMOS Dolores & BMOS Annie continue to motivate me as they have since the very first day on the boards. You ladies ROCK!
One of my favorite phrases is, "When you know better, you do better", by Maya Angelou. I've been given the knowledge of what foods and exercises work for my body through 6WBM, and because of that I have given MYSELF the kind of life in which there is nothing I hold back from doing.
In 14 months I've worked off 100 pounds, gone from a size 28 to a size 16, and lost 75 inches! Simply put, it is because of Michael Thurmond's 6WBM that I know better... so I do better.

    Julie ~
Absolutely awesome write up. You are now an inspiration! Just like, Annie & Dolores & FeistyElizabeth. Congrats on sticking to your goals. It is so true...if you stick with the program, it will work and like you said...the easy way out is quite different than working for something worth while - to be healthy and be beautiful!
Your new pics look fabulous - great job!

You look great. And you give me hope. I have been struggling with the plan for so long. Always taking the easy way out and making excuses.
Thank you for pointing that out to me. I was lecturing my 6 yo last night about her behavior in shcool and how there is an easy way and a right way to behave. THe easy way is to talk and act out like everyone else, because they are. THE right way is to do what you know is right ni spite of everyone else.
I guess it is time for me to Do as I say, so that she can do what I do.
Thanks for your write up Jules.
You have really helped me understand some things.

    Jules,
Wow! What a great write up! I am so proud of you and all that you have accomplished. I am even more impressed that you have shared your story and your feelings with others. It's stories like yours that help others to know they are not alone. There are so many similarities in your life to mine. The loneliness and inability to own up to what we were doing to ourselves. This is the sensible way to living and finally we have given ourselves permission to be happy and live out our lives in any way we choose.
Thanks for sharing and helping others. Congratulations on your success!
    Best of luck always!

MsJean: Thanks for the props! You're quite an inspiration yourself! I'm going for the green avatar next!
Joni: I think it's great that you restarted last month! Keep it up, you know you can do it!
Dan the Man: I have been watching your progress forever... you are one of the "constants" on this website, someone I know who is always going for his personal best, and that makes me want to do my personal best, too! Thanks for the words of encouragement! You have truly walked ahead of me on this path and I'm glad you're around these parts leaving footprints for the rest of us to follow in the right direction!
Dee! Don't let Dan harass you too much-- although I know it's just a big lovefest around here! ha ha You know how much I appreciate you & your generosity in the sharing of YOUR story. You really do rock!
Cheryl: Thanks to you too for the kind words of encouragement! Your photos are incredible!
Kit Kat: You used to be my favorite candy bar! ha ha ha Ok, seriously... I think it's all because of your own strength that you saw the connection in my story to what you have been trying to teach your daughter about "the easy path" and "the RIGHT path". Since you know better, you're doing better, and that is exactly the lesson I've learned as well! For so many people who sometimes feel so alone in this struggle for balance, we're all in this together, aren't we?
Karen(ChaseBrad): Ok, can we talk about your gallery? Speaking of inspiration! You have done a wonderful job-- I can't get over that current photo of you standing in one leg of your pants. I haven't tried that yet-- maybe I should get out the pair of jeans I held on to & see... I'll keep you posted.
Trish: I think everybody has been in their own dark prison at one time or another... it's wonderful to work your own way out of it, isn't it? Keep it up!
Donna(redhereford): Oh my gosh, I have seen your biceps & let me just say that I "got my tickets to the gun show"!!! WOW, that is amazing. Makes me want to run to my bands & work it out! Thanks! I'll be thinking of that tomorrow a.m.!
Pamela: (my fellow photographer/graphic designer!) Thanks for the congrats!!!

    Sincerely,
    Jules

    JULES!!!!! :D :D :D
If I'd ever learned to do a cartwheel I'd be turning them fast enough to obtain a contract with Cirque du Soleil right now!! I've absolutely adored you from your very first post and consider myself the lucky one for having gotten to know you. I admire your outstanding attitude and encouragement SO much. To this day I still "RESIST, RESIST, RESIST!" and think of you :) You came to the boards and were able to pick me up and dust me off at a very low point when I needed to catch the spirit of a new plan member (and a reminder that it's never easy but DEFINITELY worth it!!) and I think of you as one of MY inspirations. Watching you melt and seeing your pictures now brings tears to my eyes (and spilling over my cheeks!) because I am so proud of you and this amazing accomplishment. I am impressed with you as a person far beyond any string of words could ever truly express and I couldn't be happier to see anyone gracing the tops of our forums here as such a wonderful role model. Your pictures and beaming smile bring new meaning to the word fabulous :)
Enjoy your month as our reigning superstar and take every compliment and well wishing to heart as you have earned and deserve every syllable of it!!
    xoxo,
    e

Hi to all of you. :)
I've been reading the posts in this thread but hadn't replied because I wanted to complete my first week.
Since being off the plan since last year, and knowing full well what the plan did for me back then, I made my decision to get back on the plan and lose some serious weight. I had made up on my mind that I was going to start fresh at the beginning of October (10/4). I was so excited 2 weeks prior to the start date that I decided to start 1 week earlier (9/27) Since I had the SMART program, I also decided that I would start with Disc 2 Track 1 on Friday night (9/24). Also, since I had the WATP program also, I made the decision to get off my rump and walk.
I believe that starting early with the SMART program and WATP along with the beginning of the 6WBMO, I was able to be 100% ON PLAN my first week (and I'm still 100% OP)
When Week 1 was over, I decided to step on the scales. To my surprise, and how pleasant it was, I had lost 15 lbs. When I told my DH about my success, he was so surprised. He hasn't seen me cheat not one bit. He made mac-n-cheese for church and I didn't have an urge to sneak a taste. I made brownies for his lunch and he was amazed that I wasn't tempted to sneak a taste of the batter, let alone the brownies. This morning, I made peanut butter cookies for my mom and sister (and of course, for DH's lunch).
When it's time for bed, I usually make sure DH is first in order for me to 'suit up' with my headphones. He asked what the headphones were for, I told him "so I can hear my messages". With a weird look on his face, he asked, "what do the messages say?" All I could tell him was "I don't know. Whatever they are, I'm obeying." All he could say was, "OKAY".
I've been keeping a daily journal of everything I do on the plan since day 1. A couple of days, my DH saw me sitting at the kitchen table (after preparing his lunch along with my meals for the next day) and thought I was doing homework for school or something. Now he that he knows exactly what I've been doing, he'll ask me, "have you written in your notebook yet?"
I KNOW that knowing what I wanted to do and what I needed to do, I've been successful. I just can't wait what this 2nd weigh-in will be like on Monday. :)
(I know this was a long write-up but I just had to share with others who are successful.)
    :D
