cartoon baby polar bear cub   Personal Info:

    My Provida name is:   Arete

    Please call me:  Arete (Air-uh-tay)

    Where I live:   CT

What do you like best about living there?  Each season has its own beauty, and I live in a hilly, rural area, and the views are always great from our hilltop.

My birthday is (month and day):  DEC  27

My home includes (spouse, children, pets etc.):  DH, DDog (I guess he warrants a D now -- for a while I wasn't so sure, but he's starting to outgrow the crazy puppy faze that drove me nuts)

My occupation or what I do all day is:  Grad student - working on my dissertation, trying to rustle up funding for one more year. The rest of the day I'm a K9 wrangler (darned Ddog) and trying to be my own personal trainer, nutritionist, and cook.

Hobbies (or your favorite way to have fun): Logic puzzles, reading (especially non-fiction now, I seem to have lost a lot of patience over the years and now I just want something I can learn from)

Your favorite color: Purple! It's the color that's even fun to say!

cartoon baby polar bear cub Goals/Motivation:

My short-term goal for this 6 weeks is:  Reach 165. That's 18 pounds from my weight today.

My long-term goal(s) is/are: Learn how to keep myself under better control of food and exercise.

My biggest cheerleader is:  You folks, and DH.

My worst critic is:  Myself. And I'm in a super funk right now, so my demons (what I call those negative voices) are out in full force. I don't know what my problem is, but I'm hopeful that getting my food and exercise under control will help, because I was doing bette rin the late summer, early fall.

cartoon baby polar bear cub   NBU Experience:

Have you been in a dorm before, if so what aspects did you like best?   Yes, twice, the first time with Karen as RA even! That semester worked well for me, and I really hope this semster goes as positively. I like that the accountability and the little gimmicks NBU uses to keep us involved.

Did you have any jobs in your previous dorm? Yes, I was the news reporter once.

Why did you enroll in NBU for this semester?  The second semester I was with NBU I didn't do a very good job of staying accountable, and I ended up dropping out and not meeting my goals. I realize I need whatever extra help I can get, so I'm back in!

cartoon baby polar bear cub  Challenges/Suggestions:

Which part of the plan is easiest for you (drinking 100 oz. of water, eating 5-6 times per day, cardio 5x’s a week, or sculpting 2x’s a week):   Eating 5 - 6 times a day

Which part is the hardest?  the exercise, especially in the winter. I like to take Ddog with me to get him some exercise,  too, but it's hard when there's ice on the ground and you're as clumsy as I am. Then I end up  taking him out for short walks but don't want to drag myself to the gym before or afterward. That's got to change, obviously.

The best suggestion I have for my dorm mates:  Create meals with lots of flavor and colors to keep those 35 meals/week interesting. I highly recommend boiling chicken (yes, I know how awful that sounds) and shredding it to make lots of different meals on the fly -- like chicken soup with rice or barley and lots of frozen vegetables thrown in, chicken and rice bowl with Mexican spice mixes, tomatoes, peppers and onions, etc. I don't like committing to a week's worth of any one dish, but having the shredding chicken on hand makes it easy to satisfy most cravings with little effort. Frozen mixed pepper strips and cans of diced tomatoes are my other recommendations.

What do you think we can do to help you succeed?  Be active and challenge me.

cartoon baby polar bear cub General Information:

Do you keep a journal?  Nope.

My favorite form of exercise is:  Jogging with the pup. I feel strong when I do it, and being with him makes me notice more things, like birds and chipmunks, because he notices them. Plus, I figure that trying to control him on the leash must give me an extra upper body workout you typically don't get when jogging!

Where I like to go think is:  The shower.

My favorite kitchen gadget is:  Hmm. The food scale is crucial, but it's so practical and useful, I'm not sure it's my favorite. I think my current favorite is the mandolin (the slicer thing, not the instrument). I've got a big bag of apples about to go bad, and it has occured to me that I could slice them up in the mandolin and then bake the slices with cinnamon to be our PM snack. The best part of Apple ick is the filling, and that's what this would be. Sounds good to me.

Last movie I watched in a theater was:  Avatar. I love gimmicks, and 3D-Imax was just the gimmick for me!

My favorite TV show(s) is/are:  House, Bones

Finish this sentence:  I love the smell of . . .orange blossoms

    Good luck, everyone!

    Hi Polar Bear buddies!

I just got a few minutes to get to the house between clients.  Actually, it is a mercy run - mercy for my clients this afternoon. I had to run by where some of my nanny goats are one pasture.  One of them looked quite sick so I had to carry her to the pickup to get her to the vet.  She graciously shared her scours with me: shirt, jeans, shoes. Eeeewwwww...!

So, I came to the house, pealed those off and will put on clean stuff as soon as some jeans come out of the dryer.

What a treat to come home in the middle of the day.  I heated up some soup and am enjoying a big chug of water.  Might even make some hot tea.

Great to see a number of us already touching base and settling in.

Karen - Thanks for the warm welcome.  I really, really like the polar slide for the dorm.  I will use it often. It makes me giggle.

Sandy - Geocaching.  A friend of mine just clued me in to this. Sounds like great fun. I want to learn more about it.

Jodi - The thumb of Michigan? Is that the top part?  It kinda looks like a thumb....I am curious about your Provida name.  Does it have a story?

Arete - thaks for giving us phonics for your name.  It is beautiful.  When I first saw it, I immediately thought of the pronunciation that implies a high mountain ridge.  I bet you get that a lot. I will work hard to get my brain wrapped around your beautiful name. Grad student in CT. Cool. I loved grad school because of how much I was challenged and the friends I made.

Kathy - YAY!!! I could not have been more blessed! WooHoo! (Do these girls know what they are in for?) Hey, you settled into the bedroom just next to mine.

    Photobucket'>

We share a bathroom.Photobucket'> Oh, yeah, look out for the tennis ball in the tub....Kaya says Heidi can play with it, too.

Good2me ~ Nice to be in dorm again together! Don't worry, you are not the only one who has some damage control to do! LOL! (I'm trying to repair some of it before the first weigh in! Wink) Looking forward to getting into some trouble with you again this semester...oh, I mean hanging out again this semester! (never know when Karen might be around listening...)

Jodi ~ Welcome to Polar Bear Hall! I saw that you spend time on face book...my MIL had me sign up and I still have yet to take the time to figure that out. I got an e-mail saying she wrote on my wall, so I sent her an e-mail back calling her a vandal! Smile I saw that you have Biggest Loser for Wii...how do you like it? I have been thinking about getting it, but when I read reviews they seem to be all over the place. And don't worry...we'll help you stay on track so you can get into great shape before the Hawaii trip. I wish I had been in better shape when we went 2 years ago! Wel there's always next time.

Arete ~ I am my worst critic as well, and I do notice how much harder it can feel during the winter. I don't get my dogs out nearly as much as I should... and since we have a 14 month (dog) in the house who pings off the walls if we don't get him out I am teaching him how to use the treadmill. LOL His mom lays there and looks as if the two of us are idiots... So glad no one has a camera...well maybe we could win money if someone recorded us...naw. So how cold is it in your area right now? And are there trails you can take your pup to where your less likely to fall? We have a 60 acre off leash dog park we go to, so I can at least go out and do that even when it's been 12F (dogs seem to love the cold)

Cowgirl ~ Welcome! So what types of dogs to you have? I won't ask about the cats since you have so many. LOL Smile We have trouble here just keeping one in line...and unfortunately have found out that DS is very allergic to him, so guess where he likes to sleep? Tongue Tied  I love that you are motivated by winning...looking forward to some of these challenges! Cause I'm sure Polar Bear Hall is going to win each one! Wink By the way, do you use your George Forman Grill a lot? I've thought about getting one, but have never really talked with anyone who uses theirs much. Oh, and I love the smell of fresh brewed coffee too! Unless my DH buys a fancy bold kind... I have honestly had several mornings where I am jumping out of bed thinking a dog had an accident... nope...and he drinks the stuff.Ick!

How did you like Avatar, we haven't seen it yet?

Well we were fostering the kitten and since it almost died and the kids raised it he never went back to the shelter... he is a great cat, but he always darts outside and we have coyotes around...and of course his favorite person is my son.
A vita-mix is like a very powerful blender, I think they now use them in most Starbucks and places that make juice/smoothies. We had ours for 11 years and it wonderful.
We all thought Avatar was really good. The kids did not want to see the 3D version so we saw the regular one. Even my DD liked it and sat for the whole movie! (ok, she cried at a part and said she didn't like "that part" but she's 9)
Great job getting your treadmill time built up now...how are your new meds working??

Well it's very unusual to not have Karen around during the day, but our illustrious leader is having some technical difficulties with her work computer today. Don't worry I am sure she will make an appearance later on tonight when she gets home from work!

    {now what can I do while Karen is gone....hehehe}

    This is me without NBU

There is something intrinsically wrong with below freezing levels along the Gulf Coast. That being said, I am excited about being back at NBU. This is going to be a great semester.

8ItAll ~ KAREN :  Hi Karen. I have seen you around campus in the past and love the way you post. Looking forward to getting to know you better this semester.

S.J. ~ SANDY: Hi Sandy, very glad to meet you. I love the state of Washington. I took my DD there for her 18th birthday. It was a lot of fun. What is geocaching? This is going to be a great semester.

Arete : Hi Arete – thank you so much for the pronunciation. I would have been awake tonight thinking about it. That is so awesome that you are a Grad student. I have been considering returning to school – a bit nervous but excited. Looking forward to getting to know you.

Austin loser ~ Beth: Hey Beth – my second favorite city in the US. The first time I ever did NBU I was at NBCC. It helped tremendously. Have you read the books by Terry Goodkind that the Legend of the Seeker are based on? There is a new one out and it is a continuation. Look forward to seeing you around.

Heidilove ~ Kathy: Hi Kathy. You live in an area of the country that I have never gotten to visit. I am looking forward to experiencing your sense of humor.

Sunshine101_11 ~ Jodi: Hey Jodi, glad to meet you. My family and I lived in McComb County 15 years ago. We still have some very awesome friends that we keep in contact with. Very awesome about the Oahu trip!!

Wildandwooley ~ Cowgirl: Hey Cowgirl. I think we were in a dorm one time before. Good to see you and looking forward to hearing your perspective on things. I love the wide open skies of Texas when they are far away from the cities. The stars do go on forever.

    Good night Everyone!!

    NBU Winter 2010 Contract
    an In-Dorm Icon Assignment

    NBU is about commitment.

    So is weight loss!

If you put something in writing

you are more likely to reach that accomplishment.

If you read what you wrote each day,

it is more likely you will achieve it.

If you read it aloud each day, it's even more likely.

When you write out your contract below
you have the option of adding in your goal for this semester.

When you read your contract each morning,

you will automatically read your goal as well!

It's good to keep that goal front and center.

Are you ready to earn your first icon of the new semester?

For those of you who complete the NBU Contract
before the end of Week One, you will receive the following
    icon for your signature.

Please print the following post and place it on the fridge or closet door or somewhere where you can see it each day. Possibly even on the mirror in the bathroom or by the computer. It will serve as a reminder of the commitment you have made to NBU (and to yourself!) for the next six weeks.

    NBU works best
when everyone gives to the group and takes what they need.
So do it, make that commitment to jump in feet first!
The more you give to your dormmates
the more you will receive in the end.
You may also find that the more you help your dormmates,
    the more you will LOSE

My birthday is (month and day): June 13th

My home includes (spouse, children, pets etc.): DH, DD9, Ddog, 2dcats, OK, and 1 fish

My occupation or what I do all day is:

Hobbies (or your favorite way to have fun): time with family, travel, coffee with a friend, reading fiction, women's circle I've been part of for many years.

Your favorite color: blues and greens

cartoon baby polar bear cub   Goals/Motivation:

My short-term goal for this 6 weeks is:10-15 lbs. I was at my LL goal but have damage control to do from the holidays AND I've decided to lower my goal from 135 to 130 or 125-130 so I have some work to do to get there. Also, I'm kicking up the fitness.

    My long-term goal(s) is/are: 130 or under and fit!

My biggest cheerleader is:DH, and folks I've met here

My worst critic is:I don't really have a critic in my life. I guess I could say me, at times, but I tend (and try) not to spend a lot of time with that. Life's too short.

cartoon baby polar bear cub  NBU Experience:

Have you been in a dorm before, if so what aspects did you like best? In fact, I had the pleasure of being in Karen and Sandy's dorm last semester and secretly hoped to be with them again. I really like the accountability and support. I, too, slacked off in-between semesters.

Did you have any jobs in your previous dorm? No.

Why did you enroll in NBU for this semester?Because I decided to lower my goal and this will help and motivate me.

cartoon baby polar bear cub  Challenges/Suggestions:

Which part of the plan is easiest for you (drinking 100 oz. of water, eating 5-6 times per day, cardio 5x’s a week, or sculpting 2x’s a week): water

Which part is the hardest?I would've said sculpting but I just joined a gym and will be doing some sculpting classes that I used to really love. Anyone ever do BodyPump? So, I'll say the timing of meals.

The best suggestion I have for my dorm mates:Stay with it. Just stay with it. Make food ahead so you can just assemble meals and go.

What do you think we can do to help you succeed? Chat about how you make plan work. Tricks, ideas. Support.
