    Dear Wildcats,

I am one of the queens of the information post. I will be posting A LOT of information in the next few days. I feel the more information you have, the more successful you will be.  I also welcome questions you may have about how to use this program.

Also please visit the lockerroom, and food services for information. Please identify yourself in a post when you visit. You can pose questions there also. The quad is more for fun.

For those of you who have never been in NBU before, we have a pep rally in the quad at the end of the first week. We will be needing a mascot, motto, and cheer to post there. It is always a lot of fun. Any ideas for these, please post in the dorm. For those who are not new, I have 2 badges made to vote between.

Talked to DH on the phone, before he gets ready to go to bed for the night.  he said that I left alot of stuff behind.  Somethings I am going to have him just sell or give away/throw away whatever.  A few things he will be sending home to me in the mail.  I feel bad for him.  he had a can of chicken noodle soup for dinner tonight. I suppose that was better then him ordering fast food, which we did alot over there, due to our work scheduel.  All we ever had time for whas eating, sleeping and working.  We spent 4 hours a day on our commute to work and back. Get home, eat shower and sleep for 6 hours before having to start over.  No wonder I gained all my weight back.

    Welcome to Winter Semester!!

Hello!  I am Kirby, Dean of Student Activities.

I oversee all of the challenges, help the RAs behind the scenes, chat with you all & make sure all is well in Providaland. Sometimes I come into the dorms and answer questions if I see one unanswered but mostly I just read the dorms and make sure that everything is going smooth.

I will be dropping by all of the dorms and leaving you with some Kirby Mail, at least once a week, with the Kirby Mail graphic, as seen above. This "Mail" may be a motivational post, a call to action, a question I'd like you to answer or something that I haven't thought of yet! This is just something fun and is not required by anyone, but I do hope
    you enjoy Kirby Mail!

The second post in your dorm is from me.  It contains a link to the Kirby Mail main links page in the Quad.  I also have Food Journals in that post (in the Quad) so go take a look.  Each time a Kirby Mail is posted the Quad page will be updated, so you can easily find any of my posts that you'd like to read again.

I hope you have had a fun move-in week. Week One - Day One will begin bright and early on Monday! Have those tape measures handy, your scale available & the courage to dig in and get this weight off for good -- or maintain that loss if you are Living Lean.

2008 is going to be a Great Year for Losing Weight!

    I believe in you,

    Kirby

Good morning/afternoon all! Things are going well for me today....not too much to do...a day to relax!! Weeee!

    Hi Starla!! Glad you're here!

I'm sorry to hear about all the frustrating relationships folks are in (brothers, mothers, etc)...I guess I need to spend more time beign truly thankful for the healthy relationships I have with family. Wow.

Angie...so your hubby is still overseas? When does he get home? Hos do you handle that separation? We did 10 years in the Navy with only one shore duty stint...we got out because the separation just wasn't very conducive (spelling?) to a strong marriage!

Well, I was just poppin in to say HI! Hope you all have a great day!

    Good Afternoon Gals!

Well, Christmas is officially over and packed away at our house.  I LOVE putting out all of my Christmas things, my village, and decorating the tree.  But it also feels good when it's over and everything is packed up and in the back room.

I don't have a lot of time to chat right now.  DH wants to get online, plus DD#2.  I guess I have to be nice and share!  I'll be back later!

    TTFN!

Hey everyone!  I know I've been AWOL for the past few days, I am working full time, going to school (OSU), and trying to do a really great job recruiting for my sorority.  I will try to post every day, but it's been crazy!

I am very excited, since I've been POP.  The 100 oz of water everyday is really hard.  I think my office thinks I'm crazy since I drink so much water, and I feel that I go pee every 5 minutes.  I walked/jogged for 50 minutes on Thursday and Friday.

I have a couple questions:  What does DD, DS, and DH stand for?  I think kids, spouse, husband, but why the D?  I know I can have rice noodles, but what about the ones with rice bran in them?  I didn't get it just in case, but thought I'd ask.

I believe it is Darling.  Darling son, darling daughter, darling husband.  then again the D could stand for: dumb, dimwit or delightful too, depending on weather or not they are on your good side or bad side that day.  LOL!

MK- DH has until May.  He did 13 years in the Marine Corp,  then he worked locally for about 6 years.  When he lost his job he became a contractor in Iraq for 22 months, was home for about 6 months then went to Kuwait to work as an Army contractor.  We were tired of being apart, so me and the two youngest went over there,  I got work with the company my DH works for after being there for 6 months.  I worked for 1 year there then had enough.  My oldest of the two boys that I had with me came home after being there for one year to finish up his senior year in high school. He's in the middle of his school year now.  He got home in August when we came home for vacation.  It is good to be back here for good, but I do miss DH.  I know he'll be back soon though, so that is good.  We are going on 23 years of marriage this August.  Our oldest is now 21, then I have an 18 year old and a 13 year old.  My 13 year old is really happy to be back here. Yes, military life is tough and being away from each other is tough.  Sometimes I must say that absence makes the heart grow fonder.  I do seem to need my breaks once in awhile though.  I think we all do.

Take a look and see if there's a position that interests you!   Remember several positions can be more than one person!

    Job Descriptions

It is important that we have people to help with the day to day running of this dorm. These jobs are voluntary and not required, but extremely helpful. Please read through and see which one would suit you best. Then, send me a PM and I will get a job list together and post shortly. IF there is a position not listed and you feel you are best suited for, please let me know. We are always willing to open new jobs.

Wildcat  Hall Monitor ~ This person checks for daily attendance and PM’s RA first thing Monday morning. I will give perfect attendance icons on Monday for the previous week. Also will let the RA know if someone has not posted in 3 days.

    JEN

Wildcat Stats Keeper ~ This person  will Collect weekly stats posted on Mondays. Complete spreadsheet and email to me and to the Dean of Student Records by midnight Wednesday each week. A mandatory spreadsheet will be provided, so you MUST know Excel and be able open the Excel file and email the file. This is a cool job...very fun to see everyone's progress! And a job that I really REALLY need help with! VIP Wildcat! The spreadsheet is all worked out and formatted, just a fill ‘er up.

    ANNIE

Wildcat News Reporter ~This person will report the Dorm News both in our dorm and to the News Editor in the Quad once a week and due Wednesday night by email. This will be someone who reports our dorm happenings and challenges (i.e. birthdays, new avatars, pillow fights, etc.) There is a format to be used and a template to pull the news from the Wildcats. Create a “Nightly Newscast” for those who do not have the time to read every single post. Highlight special happenings for the day. Keep students aware of challenges, homework, etc.  This will be a big job, so we can have more than one reporter!

    STARLA

Wildcat Challenge Coordinator ~ This person will handle the Campus Challenges from Kirby and the In Dorm challenges  and Dorm To Dorm Challenges. This will include tracking  the reporting templates and calculating scores. Possibly will list participants who have earned icons, etc.

    JEN

Dorm Chef ~ Highlight recipes. Post helpful hints for cooking and kitchen tips. Post recipes either from other dorms, the Food Services building or Provida. Will keep all of our recipes in Wildcat Café so they are easier to find. I will link it to the cheat sheet.

    TRUDEE

Personal Trainer ~ Post helpful hints and tips regarding exercise and health. Bring back information posted in the Locker Room.

    CARLA

Cheerleaders/Motivational Speakers ~ Help keep the students of the dorm stay motivated through encouragement and positive reinforcement. Post any motivational thoughts, ideas, and post “rah-rahs” in the Student Records Office after grades are posted for the week. Also post our challenge wins in the Quad!

    STARLA

Wildcat Avatar Tracker ~ Watch for any changing avatars and post some encouraging words to acknowledge that particular student. Note all of the new avatars weekly after stats are posted.

    ANGELA

Wildcat Party Planners ~ Someone to handle birthday announcements. You could plan a pajama party, pillow fight, poetry reading, whatever you want to celebrate. Or celebrate our losses after stats, our wins in challenges.  Winter.  Wednesday. Whatever.

Class Clown ~ post amusing cartoons, jokes and keeps the mood light! This is one of my favorite jobs!!

Technicians ~ Help students with posting pictures, graphics, colors, and help them to navigate through Provida. Post any websites that might be helpful in finding graphics, motivational sayings, etc.

Remember many of these are not daily jobs. There are 12 jobs and 20 of us and it take teamwork to run the dorm. If there is another job not listed that you would like to do, I am open to that.

STATS, CHALLENGE COORDINATOR, NEWSREPORTER, CHEF, AND HALL MONITOR ARE NECESSARY TO BE FILLED. And thank all you Wildcats for your help.

At the end of each NBU semester,

    I ask this question:

    "What would you do differently
if you could start this NBU semester over again?”

    Most people answer that question
    with one of two responses:

    #1 Response:
“I wish I had been totally POP with food,
and I wish I had done ALL of my exercise.”

    #2 Response:
“I wish I had paid more attention
    to what my dormmates posted
    along the way,
so I could get to know everyone better and sooner.”

I’m sharing this with you NOW
    (at the beginning)
in hopes that it will help you to avoid
    these two common mistakes!

We have an amazing opportunity here in NBU!
We have a group of “friends”
who are moving in the same direction we are.
We can draw from their strength
    and contribute to the group
or we can pull inside ourselves
    and go it alone.

In six weeks when I ask you what you would do different
if you could start the semester over again,
I want you to be able to say:

    NOTHING!

    I want you to have
    NO REGRETS!!

So . . . please take the time
to read about your dorm mates.
    Get to know them.
    Ask questions.
    Interact with the group.
Open yourself up and let us come in.
Offer what you can to the group.
Become a part of the team!

    And at the same time,
commit to REALLY follow the 6WBMO plan 100%!
    (Don’t “cheat” yourself!
    It only hurts YOU)!
    Instead, be POP with food,
drink your 100 ounces of water,
    do your cardio and toning,
be an active part of the dorm.

It is an NBU requirement that you take your measurements and report inches at the beginning of NBU, at the midpoint, and with ending stats. However, you’ll notice in your 6WBMO notebook, you’re encouraged to measure your inches WEEKLY.  Your body will undergo some amazing changes during the next 6 weeks – and not all of them will show up on the scale.  You’ll find that especially in those times of slower loss, measuring your inches will continue to provide a way to celebrate your success along the way!

How Do I Take My Measurements?
Measure the 13 spots pictured on the measurement chart that came in your black book.  Round the numbers to the nearest quarter inch.  Add up the 13 measurements, and report your TOTAL number of inches.

Do I Really Measure Both My Left Side and Right?
Yes.  You gained weight on both sides of your body, and will lose weight on both sides of your body.  So measure both sides, as indicated on the chart.

How Do I Keep Track of My Inches Each Week?
Find a method that works for you.  You can be as simple (write it down) or as elaborate (make an Excel spreadsheet and create graphs) as you like.  Your RA has access to a couple of prepared documents that you can use if you are stumped for a tracking sheet.

Is There an Easier Way to Measure Arms, Legs, and Neck?
Yes.  Some stores (including health food stores) sell a special tape measure that goes in a LOOP, making it very easy to measure the circumference of arms, legs, neck, and other parts of the body that might otherwise be hard to measure.  It sells for about $10, and is self-retracting.

    QUESTION:
What does it mean to be POP?

    ANSWER:
    POP means Perfectly On Plan.
    *  You avoid all non-plan foods (including oil & salt).
    *  You eat all the scheduled meals in the right portion sizes at the right intervals
(except the evening snack, which is optional).

    Some common questions about  POP:

Can I eat communion bread (or wafers) at church and still be POP?
YES!  Food eaten as part of a religious ceremony does not count against you.

I fast once a week (and/or for religious holidays).
Do I count myself POP on those days?

YES!  Again, eating (or not eating) in order to carry out your religious worship
    does not count against you.

For medical reasons, my doctor wants me to eat an off-plan food.
Can I still count myself as POP?
YES!  Just make sure you’re not over-eating that food
(beyond what your doctor says you need). Also, make sure you report it to your RA.
However, if you failed to plan properly (i.e. didn’t bring an on-plan lunch)
and get stuck, then you’re NOT POP.

    I skipped a meal today because I wasn’t hungry.
Can I still count that as POP?

No.  POP means that you ate ALL your scheduled meals.
(The evening snack is the only optional meal).

I was a half hour late with one of my meals.
Can I still count myself POP?
No.  POP means that you ate ALL your meals on time.

    I have a medical condition
that requires me to monitor my blood sugar.
When it "crashes", my doctor wants me to eat a little yuck.
    Am I still POP?

YES!  At a time like that, "yuck" would be considered "medicine".
But eat only the type and quantity of yuck specified by your doctor.
(It's not an excuse to eat off plan for the rest of the day!)
NOTE: While following the 6WBMO plan,
many people find that their blood sugar medications need to be adjusted
    (and sometimes even eliminated)!
So remain in contact with your doctor regarding this,
and NEVER take yourself off of prescribed medications
    without your doctor's approval!

I had one tiny nibble of an off-plan food,
yet ate POP the rest of the day.
Can I count as POP for the day?

Nope.  One bite might seem small and insignificant, but if we let it slide,
then pretty soon we’re eating LOTS of “one bites” – and that means trouble!

I got up super early (or stayed up super late).
How do I adjust my eating so that I’m still POP?
    Always eat breakfast.
Then space your meals 2-3 hours apart, as usual.
If you’re trying to “spread out” your meals a little more
(because you got up early), then push the spacing to 3 hours.
If you’re trying to “scrunch” your time (because you slept in), space them 2 hours apart.

    Confused about the differences in
Body Type letters and Food Classifications?

There are two different lettering systems
    used in the 6WBMO program.

BODY TYPES: Michael Thurmon has identified five different body types (A, B, C, D, and E) to describe the five different kinds of people he has encountered in his many years of working in the field of nutrition and weight control.  Identifying your BODY TYPE is important, because it will determine which of five Custom Eating Plans you will be using.

FOOD CLASSIFICATIONS: In developing this program, Michael Thurmon researched the various kinds of foods and how the respond in the body.  He found that some foods can be eaten in large quantities, while some foods need to be restricted or even eliminated during weight loss.  Michael ranked these foods in groupings, so that he could assign different portion sizes for the foods in each grouping.

For each body type, there are prescribed portions of each classification for each food group.
So while the letters used to identify BODY TYPES do not directly correspond to the letters used for FOOD CLASSIFICATIONS, following your Fast Track Menu Card will show you what's allowed for your Body Type on your Custom Eating Plan.  At the bottom of each meal box, under the heading “Infinite Menu Planner Choices”, you’ll see the substitutions you are allowed to make.

If you follow your eating plan closely, paying attention to the different food groupings and portion sizes, you will get the right amounts of the right foods for your unique body type.

    Kirby3131:

Each week, you have the opportunity to earn NBU points:

    Food: 7 per week
    Water: 7 per week
    Cardio: 5 per week
    Toning: 2 per week

These points allow you to earn icons for your signature.
    The more points you have,
the better your icons will be!

Your dorm's total points are averaged together,
and the dorm with the highest average
is announced in the Student Records Office
and wins "bragging rights" for the week!

You signed up for NBU because you wanted a
group to belong to for extra accountability.
So, YES, your points matter to the dorm.

HOWEVER, if you're struggling, it's far more important for you
to work to get on plan and stay there than to worry about
    how the dorm competitions.

We care about you and we want you to succeed.
Your long term success our long term goal!

So as you proceed into your week
keep in mind that your decisions affect not only YOU
    but also your dormwhich
is exactly what you wanted when you signed up.
