A million years ago when I was a kid, I was an extremely picky eater. I ate ham, but no eggs. Pancakes, no butter or syrup. Everything had to be plain. I remember eating a lot of steaks and potatoes, sitting at the dinner table in tears because my parents wouldn't let me leave until I'd at least tasted my vegetable. That was a real battle: about the only ones I could tolerate were carrots and canned green beans. I insisted that I hated things I'd never even tasted and even if I didn't mind the taste I'd lie, say things were terrible and make myself gag rather than consume things I didn't want. I remember this very specifically: forcing this reaction because I wanted to be left alone with my limited food choices. Much as I resented it at the time, I thank God that my parents had the sense to BE parents rather than let me take charge-- no they didn't force feed me, they just kept exposing me to these foods over and over again. I think that on some level, I'd already learned to like more things than I was willing to let on. I was just too stubborn to let them know they were right.
As I grew older, I found I really didn't like being pidgeonholed as "picky." I hated being whispered about, hated the looks I got when I turned down certain foods, hated the way I couldn't stay for dinner at friends' homes because I wouldn't eat what was on the menu. So I decided to change. I decided to LEARN to like things. Oddly, I don't remember much about the entire process of changing-- I can only tell you that because it was something I was determined to overcome, I did in fact overcome-- and in the ultimate twist of irony I emerged on the other side as someone who'll now eat most anything. How's that for an amazing turnabout? But I also happen to believe very strongly that human beings are capable of a great deal more than we think we are. If we want to stop growing and changing at a certain part of our lives, we do that-- but if we want to keep learning, evolving and overcoming our limitations, the sky can be the limit.
It's that way with weight loss, too. I saw this plan and thought: Wow. I can do this. Know what? I could. It's all a matter of deciding you want to change-- and once you do that-- REALLY do that-- the sky IS the limit.
